Okatie, SC – (September 4, 2019) – Due to the current (8 AM) forecast for Hurricane Dorian and out of an abundance of caution, Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Authority (BJWSA) plans to restrict the flow of water at the following causeway valves at beginning at 4 PM September 4 to protect the drinking water system:
- Bermuda Bluff
- Birdfoot Landing
- Callawassie Island
- Cat Island
- Coosaw Island
- Distant Island
- Vivian’s Island
- Harbor, Hunting and Fripp Islands
- Horse Island Drive
- Kingston Key Drive
- Myrtle Island Drive
- Pine Island
- Tansi Village
- Warsaw Island
The purpose of the water restriction is to avoid a catastrophic loss of water system pressure should a failure of the pipeline within a causeway occur due to the effects of the hurricane. Customers in these areas will still have water service but may experience lower water pressure.
Updates are constantly available on our website under homepage news (bjwsa.org) as well as on social media. (facebook.com/BJWSA | twitter.com/BJWSASC | instagram.com/bjwsa). To contact BJWSA, send an e-mail to info@bjwsa.org.
If any damage occurs, there will be a boil water advisory in place until customers are notified by BJWSA that it is safe to consume. Water must be boiled vigorously for at least one minute before drinking or cooking. For further instructions, go to https://www.epa.gov/ground-water-and-drinking-water/emergency-disinfection-drinking-water.
BJWSA follows state and federal guidelines for protecting the integrity of our system. These critical lines run across causeways, making them vulnerable to storm surge, wind and other calamities associated with hurricanes.
