OKATIE, SOUTH CAROLINA (December 23, 2015) – An estimated 25,000 gallons of wastewater was released at a construction site at the intersection of Highway 278 and Highway 46 at around noon December 22, 2015. The release occurred because of construction activities in the immediate vicinity.
BJWSA crews responded to the release, and coordinated appropriate cleanup/repair action to mitigate the effects of the release. BJWSA has reported the release to the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control (SC DHEC), and residents in this area are asked to avoid the area of the sewer release. A “Notice of Sewer Overflow” sign has been posted in the affected area and will remain for three days.
BJWSA has a well-trained and experienced field operations crew to monitor our wastewater collection system. These crews maintain the sewer lines to ensure the safe daily delivery of an average of 6.5 million gallons of wastewater to eight area wastewater treatment facilities for treatment and disposal.
If you see or suspect any type of spill from the sewer collection system, please contact BJWSA at 987-9200.
