Okatie, SC (July 12, 2010) — Two weeks ago, BJWSA alerted customers to a water scam being conducted in our area. The scammers were contacting customers and asking for credit card information in order to avoid water cut-offs.
BJWSA has recently been alerted to renewed criminal activities by the scam artists. The apparent criminals have continued their calling efforts, but have manipulated the phone system to read as if their call was coming from BJWSA. BJWSA believes that criminals have manipulated the phone system through a process known as “Caller ID Spoofing.” The scam callers have also been identifying themselves, by name, as specific BJWSA employees. Several calls have been abusive in nature.
Please know that BJWSA will not call you for collections. Customer Service will also never call after 5:00 p.m. for any reason. The local authorities have been notified of this problem, and BJWSA will work with police in any manner necessary to put an end to this activity.
BJWSA is committed to the highest level of customer service and apologizes for any inconvenience this activity may have caused.
